Becoming a more independent learner with Caption.Ed

Anna is a first-year student at Arden University. Like many students beginning their studies, she wanted to find the best ways to stay organised, keep up with fast-paced lessons, and take clear notes she could return to later.

Before university, Anna had a support worker who supported her throughout school. Moving into a university environment brought new challenges — lectures moved quickly and covered complex topics. Anna knew she needed extra tools to help her follow along and take notes independently.

“Sometimes it’s difficult for me to understand a complicated subject, which takes me more time to get what’s been said and take notes,” she shared with us. Preparing strong notes ahead of lessons has also been another challenge for her.

Anna had never used assistive technology before starting university. Caption.Ed became her first experience of using accessibility software to support her studies.

She quickly found that Caption.Ed’s live captioning and note-taking tools made it easier to follow along with lessons at her own pace. The ability to replay specific parts of a lecture and re-read what was said helped her stay on track and deepen her understanding of complex topics.

One of the features Anna values most is time-stamped notes, which let her revisit the key parts of a lecture whenever she needs that extra context. This has been especially useful for reviewing complicated sections or clarifying areas she didn’t catch the first time.

Caption.Ed has helped Anna feel more confident managing her own studies and keeping up with course content. With the ability to review accurate captions and notes, she’s found new independence in her learning and recommends Caption.Ed to other students who face similar challenges.

Through its enterprise partnership with Caption.Ed, Arden University has shown a strong commitment to accessibility, ensuring that all students can benefit from assistive technology, not just those receiving funding through schemes like the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA).

By providing free Caption.Ed seats to students who need additional support, Arden has taken steps to create a more inclusive learning environment where every student can engage, participate, and thrive — no matter their learning style or pace.
