Grace’s story
How Caption.Ed helps with live sessions and in-person lectures
Grace Stangroome
University of Bristol

Grace is a PhD student at the University of Bristol who navigates her academic journey with neurodivergence. She relies on assistive technology to help her stay on top of lectures, assignments, and deadlines. While the university provides recorded lectures with captions, live sessions were still a challenge for her — keeping up with the discussion while taking notes was overwhelming.
Grace had tried various in-built tools but found that none matched the accuracy and reliability of Caption.Ed. With Caption.Ed, she could focus on her studies without the stress of manually capturing every detail during live calls and in-person lectures.
“Caption.Ed has been really good for live calls and also for the in-person sessions. It just picks up the audio so much better.“
Finding the Right Assistive Technology
When Grace’s disability support plan was reviewed, she was introduced to Caption.Ed as a potential solution. “We think you might benefit from Caption.Ed based on your disability support plan. Would you like it?” she recalls being asked. Her answer was an immediate “Yes, please!”
Since lecture recordings were already captioned, she didn’t require additional support for pre-recorded content. However, live sessions and in-person discussions were a different story. She needed a way to keep up without feeling overwhelmed by note-taking ― a tool that could provide accurate, real-time captions during live sessions and in-person lectures. So, Caption.Ed became the perfect fit.
Enhancing Learning and Reducing Stress with Caption.Ed
Before using Caption.Ed, Grace often had to juggle multiple tasks — trying to listen, remember deadlines, and write everything down at the same time. This often led to missed details, especially when lecturers moved quickly between topics.
With Caption.Ed, Grace no longer struggles to keep up. The software captures everything spoken in real time, ensuring she could fully engage with the content without distraction. Instead of worrying about remembering deadlines and noting down complex instructions during fast-paced conversations, she could rely on Caption.Ed to keep an accurate record of everything discussed.
While the University of Bristol offers various assistive tools, Grace found that Caption.Ed provided a level of accuracy and functionality that truly met her needs. By capturing live speech clearly and giving her the ability to review it later, the software has transformed the way she engages with her studies.
We’re so pleased Caption.Ed has empowered Grace to focus on her learning without the stress of capturing every word herself.
