Kim’s story
Reclaiming focus and productivity with Caption.Ed
Kim Turton
Strategic Lead for Lived Experience | Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust

When Kim Turton was promoted into a senior leadership role at the Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, the expectations of the job naturally increased. From writing business cases and reports to leading interviews and supervising colleagues, the stakes were higher, and so was the pressure.
But Kim, who is dyslexic and has ADHD, found that the assistive technology she’d been using for over a decade wasn’t keeping up. It didn’t work with her new equipment, and the support had long since dried up.
“I had my last Access to Work assessment back in 2010,” Kim explained. “The software was outdated and just didn’t work with my new laptop or headset.”
So she self-referred for a new Access to Work assessment and that’s when things started to change.
Struggles beyond reading and writing
Like many professionals with ADHD or dyslexia, Kim found that her challenges extended well beyond reading and writing. In meetings, the pressure to process, retain, and act on spoken information in real-time was overwhelming.
Writing notes during discussions didn’t always help, especially when reviewing them later and realising they no longer made sense. Short-term memory difficulties added another layer of complexity. And the mental effort it took to keep up? Draining.
Without the right support, these everyday tasks led to missed details, mounting fatigue, and a dip in confidence.
“Caption.Ed helps me stay focused in meetings with real-time captions. I use it to create to-do lists by talking into it and take notes during supervision. I can mark and capture actions easily.”
Improved focus and productivity with Caption.Ed
Caption.Ed quickly became an everyday tool for Kim, helping her recall important details, reduce anxiety, and feel more in control at work.
Whether supervising colleagues or interviewing new team members, she no longer had to worry about missing something. Instead of juggling the pressure to process, write, and contribute all at once, she could now concentrate fully on conversations, knowing she had a reliable record to revisit later.
Kim also noticed clear improvements in her productivity and performance. Tasks like managing deadlines and writing reports started to feel more manageable and less mentally exhausting.
Getting the right support through Access to Work
Following her assessment, Kim was recommended Caption.Ed and she was immediately on board.
“Access to Work explained what it could do and I was sold on it,” she shared with us.
Caption.Ed’s real-time captions helped Kim stay focused in meetings without the pressure of having to write everything down. She now uses it to talk through her to-do lists aloud, take notes during supervision, and flag actions in the moment, all of which have helped her feel more organised and in control.
What would Kim say to someone else with ADHD or dyslexia?
If you’re struggling with focus, memory, or managing information at work, Kim highly recommends giving Caption.Ed a try: “It’s been a life-saver. Caption.Ed has improved my focus, reduced my anxiety, and boosted my productivity.”
“It’s helped me remember things better, boosted my confidence with reports and deadlines, and reduced my fatigue. It even supported me during interviews with new staff. Thanks to Caption.Ed, instead of worrying about writing everything down, I could focus on the conversation.”
