How Caption.Ed supports students with hearing loss

After losing her hearing at the age of seven, Jane has spent most of her life navigating the challenges that come with hearing loss, particularly in educational settings. She kept finding herself in a constant struggle during lectures. “I cannot read a PowerPoint, lip-read, listen, and take notes all at the same time,” she explains.

But everything changed when Jane discovered Caption.Ed, our live-captioning and note-taking software. Now, Jane is in the midst of her Master’s program at the University of Roehampton, where Caption.Ed has transformed how she engages with her lectures and studies.

After securing her place at the University of Roehampton, Jane applied for the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA), a government-funded grant designed to support students with disabilities. Through an appointment with a university assessor, Jane was connected with a disability specialist who recognised that Caption.Ed would be the ideal tool to support her specific needs.

Prior to using Caption.Ed, Jane often found it difficult to absorb lecture content. Trying to read slides, lip-read, and take notes at the same time caused unnecessary stress and left gaps in her learning.

With Caption.Ed, Jane now has instant access to captions for everything that is said during her lectures. She can also go back and read the entire lecture all over again whenever she needs, helping her focus on the lecturer’s message without worrying about missing important information.

We’re delighted that Caption.Ed has made such a significant difference for Jane, allowing her to fully engage with her studies at the University of Roehampton.

Caption.Ed gave me greater confidence in tackling some elements of my course, which quite frankly felt like an insurmountable mountain
